“It seems because it is”

Be yourself

This sentence is by Edgar Allan Poe, but the fact is that: not always it seems because it is. It reminds me of my sister’s comment about the 1999 movie “American Beauty”. Brilliantly, she told me what this fantastic movie shows: what it is doesn’t look like and what looks like is not. Each character lived up to this comment from my sister. The seductive girl was a virgin and was afraid of sex. Her friend, silent and shy, showed herself naked to the neighbor who admired her through binoculars. The guy next door who was a drug user was a smart and sensitive good guy. His father who was a retired army sexist was a homosexual. A dramatic film that shows the reverse of things.

In the real world, in real life, it is very difficult to live authentically, but it should not be impossible. To be someone and look like the opposite of what you are? No, no way. Well, I know, people are what they are inside the skin, not outside. We are always enchanted with such and such a person because the person is polite and refined and sometimes this is just on the outside. Good manners and etiquette never guaranteed good character. A very real person can hurt me, but I prefer the truth to be flattered by the corrupt and the false.

I know that the daily struggle to have inner beauty or virtues is an uphill battle without end. We will take a lifetime falling seven times a day. Just get up and start all over again like a kid.

We should be and look like what we are. Anyway, I agree with Poe’s statement. If I look happy, it’s because I’m happy. If I look sad it’s because something made me sad. If I look insecure it’s because I’m insecure. Did anyone think not?

Anyway, let’s get better.
